What the Edge to Edge Marathon is doing to be more 'Green-Friendly':
- Volunteer and Team Relay Shirts will be made from Organic Bamboo and purchased and screened locally through a great new local business, Pina Studio and Boutique pinastyles.com - organic bamboo is eco-friendly, long lasting and cooler than cotton! Because Pina Studio and Boutique is local, we are reducing our carbon footprint by not shipping across the country.
- We are working with Tofino Bus tofinobus.com to offer shuttle service to runners, volunteers and spectators to reduce the number of cars on the highway between the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet, the Marathon & Relay's start and finish lines.
- Using email vs. printed materials when possible. For example, our lengthy Sponsorship package was sent via email as a PDF instead of printed and mailed like previous years.
- We are adding more recycling bins along the racecourse.
- No plastic bottles will go to the landfill this year!
- Leftover food from our carbo-loading dinner and from the post-race refreshment table will be donated to our local food bank.
- Leftover clothing and old running shoes and gear will be donated to a local Church which runs a weekly thrift store.
- On our website we will feature a link to pickuppal.com for the BC region. All participants will be notified of this service and encouraged to carpool to the West Coast. VIP parking will be available to those who carpool.
- Racer bags will be sustainable, reusable and eco-friendly shopping bags.
- Most equipment is now being sourced locally which again helps reduce our carbon footprint by not having to ship items across Vancouver Island to our remote location and supports our great local economy. For Example: Smashing Glasses Events in Tofino, BC is an equipment supplier this year; previously most items came from Victoria or Vancouver, BC.
- A few other green ideas that are pending: using local organic greens at the Carbo-loading dinner, trying to find an organic pasta supplier, offering carbon off-set benefits, pace bikes vs. pace cars, recycled paper for print materials.
