The Madison Marathon
What The Madison Marathon is doing to be more 'Green-Friendly':- Working with city officials to make sure there are recycling containers throughout the course.
- Serving water and Gatorade in recyclable paper cups at water stations.
- Handing bottled water to runners at the finish line only; this is a private, controlled environment where garbage will be collected and recycled. Pepsi is also contributing to this effort by supplying the finish line with additional recycling containers.
- Offering runners t-shirts made from sustainable bamboo as opposed to wicking shirts that are made from synthetic materials.
- Shuttling relay runners to their pickup destinations so they don’t all have to drive separately.
- Promoting GU Energy Gel’s “Stash Your Trash” program in which we’ll collect and send in used GU packets to be recycled. Learn more at www.gusports.com.
- Partnering with Endurance House to give runners the opportunity to drop off their old shoes for recycling at the Health & Fitness Expo and the finish line.
- Prompting runners and walkers to register for races online.
- Offering links to Ride Share services on our website.
- Collecting discarded clothes and donating them to charitable organizations.
- Asking runners, walkers and spectators to please be aware of the space around them.
About the The Madison Marathon:
Welcome to the greatest race in a Capital place! Every year Madison is ranked as one of the top cities in the nation for walking, running, biking and other outdoor activities because of our scenic lakes, incredible landmarks, beautiful architecture, spacious parks and ample green space. In the spirit of celebrating the city’s unique qualities, Madison Festivals, Inc. presents the annual Madison Marathon. Marathon runners get to see first-hand the many Madison people and places that make this such a great city in which to work, live and play.
All races – full marathon, half-marathon and quarter-marathon – begin on Capitol Square, in the shadow of Madison’s remarkable domed capitol. The finish line is at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center. Where else but in Madison can one participate in a full, half or quarter marathon only to end up at the World’s Largest Brat Fest? This is the fourth year Madison Marathon runners, walkers and spectators are invited to join our friends at the festival for fantastic free live entertainment, games and fun, and of course brats, beer and ice cold soda!
