San Francisco Marathon™

What the San Francisco Marathon is doing to be more 'Green-Friendly':
  • In 2007, we collected a suggested donation amount of $2 per runner upon registration. The suggested amount was based on the cost per runner that would be needed to put toward alternative energy sources to offset the energy used in getting to and from our race. We collected donations from 1,300 runners, and donated the money to Native Energy . This year, we hope to increase the number of runners donating to at least half of our 17,000 runners!
  • We also collected more than 1,000 pairs of used running shoes at our race expo, and donated them to St. Vincent De Paul Society in San Francisco for the homeless.
  • In 2008, we are looking to continue to find ways to make our race even more Green. We are looking into reusable goody bags, alternative fuel options for our spectator and runner buses, and partnering with additional environmentally conscious organizations.
